Design for me is a passion, a form of expression that communicates my thoughts, opinions and ideas. Everyday brings challenges that expand the limitations of design practice. At this moment, I am currently near completion of an HND in graphic design.

During my HND, I have been able to get experience with Feed. Feed is an organisation that creates a platform to provide learners with industry experience.

Recently, I was made the senior designer on the in-house Feed magazine, which was a highlight for me. It increased my confidence along with my passion to want to get more from design.

As a part of Feed, guest lecturers are invited to give a seminar about their personal journey to inspire and give more insight about the design process. There are also exhibitions held on the night, where I have gained experience working under pressure and alongside a large team of people. The skills this has given me can be adapted to other projects when dealing with time restraints.

Being around creative people has helped generate opportunities for constant debate, to work with fresh ideas and new perspectives. We work in an open plan studio environment, which naturally encourages collaboration.

One of my major achievements was a live brief that I pitched for and won. The brief was to create artwork for a music label. This made me realise, through handling the pressure and working to tight deadlines, good design has to be persevered to the end.

My starting point for inspiration varies from project to project. I try to relate research to the narrative and find clear direction. From an art history perspective it’s more towards Bauhaus, Russian constructivism, Surrealism and Dada. However when looking at design and motion graphics, the design agency Universal Everything stands out. I find that their constant collaboration feeds through to their work where they are continuously pushing the boundaries of contemporary design. A particular project that was distinctive to me was the series of idents for MTV, representing the history of music from the 90s. The appealing aspect of it was the influence of art history that was injected to produce and influence the final outcome.

I want to further my art education and have the opportunity to share what I know and continue to learn new and fresh things.

I want to study at your establishment and collaborate with the very best in both lecturers and learners. I’ll bring to your establishment an abundance of passion and a hunger to learn.

09 Portfolio

This is the result of a lot of hard work,
tons of support and advice
from tutors, family and friends.

This is a page displaying layouts of the FEED magazines.
I got the chance to interview, write and layout
my own article as well as other layouts within the book.

From all of this I was made Senior Designer,
which was amazing because I had so much fun.
The layouts of fashion based articles and
designing the images to represent them, collaborating
with photographers and talking to writers.

Then with pressure, stress and deadlines on top
was hard at the time but it pushed me
to work hard and utilise my time properly.

This was my first project in my portfolio
and finalising this project brought
the passion and drive I needed to do more and want more.

These pages were of grammar lessons,
I attended with Simon.

Mainly this was meant to be an exercise
to refresh and make sure we knew that anything written
had the correct use of grammar and punctuation.

This series of posters informing the grammar rules
with the use of song lyrics using the appropriate grammar.
Making it easy to relate to and understand.
Overall the final pieces are simple
but sophisticated enough to engage the audience.

A double page spread from a pitch with Tim Joplin.
A local photographer that requested designs
to showcase his work within a book and to be developed
into different avenues if it was chosen.

Pitching has definately got its adavantages
where you can be face to face with the client
and explain what you want to portray
from the brief and how.

To be able to do that is how I practically improve,
presenting and with vocabulary I use.

This was a pitch that I won along with another student.
It was a fantastic project in which I got to work
with the head of school, the music department teachers and the students.

It was insight into how that industry works
and how a graphic designer would fit in.

It all went so fast but was a great night
and the weridest part for me was the break down
because it happened so fast
and felt like it never happened.
